The presiding judge has ruled that jurors may consider evidence concerning Monsanto's efforts to conceal the potential toxicity of the product in reaching a verdict. The scope of potential liability for glyphosate makers is therefore enormous.

An investigation by IUF affiliate Unia into housekeeping in Marriott-branded hotels in Zürich - one of the world's most expensive cities - shows the brutal consequences of cut-throat outsourcing: extreme speed-up and exploitation of a vulnerable workforce resulting in dangerously unsanitary conditions for workers and guests and multiple violations of the regional collective agreement for the cleaning sector which sets minimum legal working conditions.

USA: farmworkers fired for speaking out against abuses

FLOC_1Two migrant farmworkers on a tobacco farm in North Carolina were abused, denied work and then summarily fired after describing substandard living conditions to an inspector from the state Department of Labor. Our affiliate, the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), is supporting the workers in their conflict with the grower and is seeking to recover thousands of dollars in stolen wages. Norway: Stop union-busting at processed fish exporter Sekkingstad!

Norway's Sekkingstad AS, a salmon and trout processor which exports to retail customers in over 50 countries, is trying to roll back a successful struggle by the Norwegian Food Workers Union NNN, which last year won recognition and a collective agreement at the company's processing sub-contractor following a 35-day strike. Brazil: Congress set to vote on making the world's leading pesticide user more toxic still

BrazilDespite mass opposition, Brazil's notoriously corrupt Congress has paved the way for a vote on easing authorization for still more pesticide use in the country which is the world's largest consumer of toxic agrochemicals. Brazil's already low standards of pesticide protection permit the massive import of dozens of chemical products like paraquat whose use is prohibited in their countries of manufacture.

Algerian government escalates its war on independent unions

AlgeriaENGThe government of Algeria is escalating its war on worker rights and independent trade unions following a critical report issued by the ILO Committee on the Application of Standards at this year's International Labour Conference. Independent unions face a new wave of repression and have been personally, viciously attacked by the Labour Minister, who has also threatened to withdraw Algeria from the ILO.

IUF U.S. affiliates condemn criminalization of migrant workers

IUF U.S. affiliates have expressed outrage at the actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) which detained 146 workers in raids at a Fresh Mark pork processing plant in Salem, Ohio where workers are members of the RWDSU/UFCW. The migrant workers who risk prosecution and deportation are mostly from Guatemala, and have settled with their families in Ohio.
